How to calculate gas cost for a trip
Divide the total distance by your car's miles per gallon to get the gallons you'll use, then multiply by the price of gas. For an electric car, divide the distance by miles per kWh and multiply by your electricity rate.
Gas cost = (Miles ÷ MPG) × Price per gallon
EV cost = (Miles ÷ Miles per kWh) × Price per kWh
Example
A 300-mile drive each way (600 miles round trip) in a car that gets 28 mpg uses about 21.4 gallons. At $3.25 a gallon, that's about $70. The same trip in an EV averaging 3.5 miles per kWh at $0.17 per kWh costs about $29 when charged at home.
Tips to spend less on fuel
- Keep tires properly inflated — under-inflated tires can cut fuel economy by a few percent.
- Drive at a steady speed. Fuel economy drops quickly above about 60 mph.
- Use a gas price app to fill up where prices are lower along your route.
- For EVs, charge at home or at your destination where possible; fast chargers cost two to three times more.
