How to convert hourly pay to salary

Multiply your hourly rate by the hours you work each week, then by the number of weeks you're paid each year. A full-time schedule is usually 40 hours a week for 52 weeks — 2,080 hours a year.

Annual salary = Hourly rate × Hours per week × Weeks per year

A quick shortcut: double your hourly rate and add three zeros. $30 an hour is about $60,000 a year (the exact figure is $62,400).

Converting salary to hourly

Hourly rate = Annual salary ÷ (Hours per week × Weeks per year)

A $75,000 salary works out to about $36.06 an hour on a standard 2,080-hour year. If you regularly work 50 hours a week, your effective hourly rate drops to about $28.85.

Freelancers: charge more than the salary math

If you're comparing a freelance rate to a salaried job, remember you'll pay both halves of Social Security and Medicare, cover your own benefits, and won't bill every hour. Many freelancers charge 1.5–2× the equivalent employee hourly rate.
